Bailiffs and their Duties

They can come in cases where there is council tax arrears, court judgment, unpaid fines, rent arrears, income tax, parking fines and things of that nature A Bailiff must have a court order to enter your home, usually you will receive a notice that the bailiff is coming You can let the bailiffs in when they arrive, or they can gain peaceful entry if you do not In some cases they are allowed to break into your property

A Bailiff has rules on what they can and cannot take They cannot take basic clothing, bedding and household goods Once the goods are taken they will be sold at auction The money received from the auction will be used to pay the bailiffs fees and the rest of the money will be given to the creditors If you are on income support or job seekers allowance the bailiffs may be allowed to work out a repayment plan with the person

Resources

The best thing to do in this situation is to contact council to help determine what can or cannot be done An individual can also contact the Citizens Advice Bureau to get help with debt facts, bankruptcy, budgeting, income tax arrears, and how to deal with the people that you owe money to The advice is free and confidential, and they will also help to negotiate with the bailiff If the experience with the bailiff is a horrible experience you can complain to the creditors, courts, police or the bailiffs superiors depending on the type of situation it is
